The Finish

What is Stone Paint — and why does one wall change the whole room?

Porter's Stone Paint is a heavily textured, aggregate-loaded coating that dries to the look and feel of natural stone. Instead of cladding a wall in real stone — with the weight, cost and building work that brings — the stone texture is applied directly to the surface by a trained applicator.

The result reads as honed stone or soft render: matte, mineral, tactile, and full of subtle variation. It's also a quiet problem-solver — the texture disguises imperfect or previously patched surfaces that flat paint would broadcast to the room.

It comes in two grades — Fine and Coarse — and choosing between them is most of the design decision. Compare it with our other decorative finishes, or get a free instant estimate for your wall.

Subtle · Honed · Refined

Stone Paint Fine

A tight, sandstone-like grain with a smooth, honed character. The quieter of the two — ideal for interiors, hallways and living spaces where you want texture you notice up close, not across the room.

Deep · Rendered · Rustic

Stone Paint Coarse

A deeper, more pronounced grain with genuine shadow and movement. Reads like rendered stone — made for feature walls, fireplaces, entrances and exteriors that want real presence.

Textures above are indicative — we'll bring real Fine and Coarse samples to your wall so you can see and touch both in your own light.

Stone Paint done properly, start to finish

Consult & sample

We assess your wall and light, then apply real Fine and Coarse samples so you choose the grade and colour by eye and by hand.

Free · No obligation

Surface preparation

Primed and prepared for the substrate — Gib, plaster, brick or render. Texture forgives a lot, but bond is everything.

Textured application

The aggregate coating is applied and worked by hand to build even, natural stone texture across the wall.

Finish & handover

Checked in raking light, sealed where the space needs it, site left spotless. A wall you'll want people to touch.

What does Stone Paint cost?

Priced per m² — get your number before you commit.

Stone Paint is an aggregate coating applied by hand, so it's priced by the wall, the grade and the prep — not a flat rate. A single feature wall is the usual entry point, and it's a fraction of the cost of real stone.

Stone Paint questions, answered

How much does Stone Paint cost in Auckland?
It's priced per m² and depends on the wall size, the grade (Fine or Coarse), the substrate and prep — textured aggregate coatings are priced differently to standard painting, but well below the cost of installing real stone. A single feature wall is the usual entry point. Get an indicative figure with our free instant estimator, or book a free consult for an exact price with samples on your wall.
What's the difference between Stone Paint Fine and Coarse?
The grain. Fine has a tight, even, sandstone-like texture that reads as honed stone — refined and quiet, ideal for interiors. Coarse has a deeper, more pronounced grain with real shadow and movement — it reads as rendered stone and suits feature walls, fireplaces and exteriors. We sample both on your wall so you can choose by eye and by touch.
Can Stone Paint go over existing painted walls, brick or plaster?
Usually, yes — with the right preparation and priming for the substrate. Stone Paint is actually one of the best finishes for previously patched or imperfect walls, because the texture disguises what flat paint would highlight. We assess the surface first and prep accordingly.
Does Stone Paint work outside?
Yes — it's a durable mineral-style texture well suited to exterior features: pillars, portals, courtyard walls, entrance surrounds and boundary walls. Outdoors we spec the system and sealing for weather exposure, and it ages gracefully rather than peeling like flat paint.
How durable is it? What about knocks and marks?
Very durable — the aggregate texture is hard-wearing and extremely forgiving of everyday knocks, scuffs and touch-ups, which blend into the grain rather than standing out. That's why it's popular in hallways, entrances and commercial spaces.
What colours does Stone Paint come in?
The classic palette is natural stone tones — warm whites, sand, greige, clay and deeper earth tones — but it's tinted, so the range is wide. Because texture changes how colour reads in light, we always sample your chosen colour in your actual grade on your actual wall first.
