Paint can't fix bad walls

The best paint job in Auckland can't save a bad surface.

The problem

Cracks, dents & damage

Settling, wear and past workmanship leave walls full of imperfections — and paint highlights every one.

The problem

Uneven, wavy surfaces

Bad plastering makes even premium paint look sloppy — especially in Auckland's raking afternoon light.

The problem

Two trades, one gap

When the plasterer and painter are different companies, the finish falls into the gap between them.

The fix: precision Gib fixing and plastering from the same team that paints the wall — so the surface is built for the finish going on it, and one crew owns the result end to end.

What we do

From patch repairs to full re-gibs

Homes, rentals, offices and commercial buildings across Auckland.

01

Gib installation & replacement

New boards measured, cut and fixed to framing with precision — walls and ceilings, solid and movement-free.

02

Gib stopping & jointing

Joints, corners and screw holes taped and coated in layered premium compound for a seamless surface.

03

Ceiling repairs

Cracks, water damage, sagging sections and plaster damage — fixed properly, not patched over.

04

Crack & hole repairs

From curtain-rod holes to cut-outs for electrical work — repaired, texture-matched and paint-ready.

05

Skim coating

Plaster skim coats that turn rough, tired walls into clean, level surfaces ready for paint.

06

Level 5 for premium finishes

The ultra-smooth base that gloss paints, sheen finishes and polished plaster demand.

The honest guide

Level 3, 4 or 5 — what finish does your wall need?

Plastering levels aren't upsells — they're matched to what's going on the wall afterwards.

The one-team advantage

The plasterer and the painter answer to the same standard.

Most plasterers never see how their walls look painted. Most painters inherit surfaces they didn't prep. At Key Painting, the same in-house team does both — so the plastering is done knowing exactly what finish is going on top.

  • One crew, one timeline — no coordinating separate trades
  • Surfaces built for the finish: standard paint, gloss, sheen or decorative
  • Durable, crack-resistant compound work that stays flawless
  • Dust-minimising sanding techniques — clean site, clean air
  • Trusted by developers, builders and brands like Dynasty Sport & Buro

Gib & plastering questions, answered

What's the difference between gib fixing and gib stopping?
Gib fixing is installing the plasterboard sheets; gib stopping is the plastering and smoothing of the joins, screw holes and corners so the wall is ready for painting. We handle both — from small patch repairs to full home re-gibbing — with one in-house team.
How much does gib fixing and plastering cost in Auckland?
It depends on area size, wall condition and finish level. Indicatively: patching and minor repairs from $250, a single-room re-gib plus stopping $1,000–$2,500, and full home re-gibbing from $6,000+ (GST included). We give accurate fixed-price quotes after a quick site visit — start with the free instant estimator.
What's the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 plastering?
Level 4 is the standard smooth finish — right for most painted walls and wallpaper. Level 5 adds a full skim coat across the entire surface for an ultra-smooth result that stays flawless even in harsh raking light. Level 5 is essential under gloss and sheen paints, dark feature walls, and decorative finishes like polished plaster.
Do I need gib fixing before painting?
If your walls have cracks, dents, water damage or rough joins — yes. Paint won't cover a bad surface; it advertises it. We prep walls properly so the final finish is smooth, durable and professional, which is exactly why our paintwork lasts.
Can you fix holes, dents and damage in existing walls?
Routinely — small holes from curtain rods and wall mounts, cracks along joins, larger dents and accidental damage, and Gib cut out for electrical or plumbing work. We match the existing texture and leave the wall paint-ready.
Do your painters also do the plastering?
Yes — our team includes experienced plasterers and gib fixers, so everything is managed in-house: one team for prep and paint, one seamless timeline, and no back-and-forth between trades. The surface is built for the finish going on it.

Every flawless finish starts under the paint.
